In addition, the philosophy of their service is not single minded, but allows for a variety of approaches depending on:

  • your individual health history
  • the intensity of the addiction
  • the intensity of the addiction

Some patients want to leave free of all drugs and medications. What is the long term success rate of detox programs in Orange County?

The effectiveness of any Detoxification is determined by not only withdrawal experience, but also the post withdrawal therapy with a licensed Orange County therapist.

For patient addicted to opiates, long-term medication support therapy can be very useful, The difference at one year can be as much as a 60% increase in maintenance of sobriety. Post-detox patients using naloxone with buprenorphine (Suboxone) in an appropriately monitored program average 60-70% free of their original addictive substance after one year. Post-detox patients using Naltexone in an appropriately monitored program average 40-60% free of their original addictive substance after one year.

Will I be placed under anesthesia?

Some of their methods work by administering medications either orally or through an IV in a controlled relaxing environment. No anesthesia is required.

How will I feel during the detox process at the Orange County facilities?

Most patients experience very little to no side effects. However, some patients experience muscle aches, nausea, and vomiting. You will be given medications to treat these symptoms if they occur. Beware of any program that claims to be totally pain free. As with any medical process there is always potential for discomfort, and this one is no different.

Are there any reasons that my detox may be cancelled after I have already arrived?

Cancellations are rare. However, there are situations where this may occur. On your first day you may undergo a thorough physical exam which may include blood work, EKG, and cardiac studies if needed. If any significant underlying health issues are found, your detox may be cancelled. If the information you have provided to the Nurse Coordinator prior to your arrival is accurate, cancellation will be very unlikely.

Am I expected to take Suboxone after Detoxing?

As opposed to other programs that have a single method for the patient to be drug and alcohol free upon discharge, many newer Orange County detox centers consider all options that are part of the standard of care for substance abuse medicine to be available for our patients. Therefore, if Suboxone is appropriate for your individual needs, you will receive Suboxone at their facility and they will provide resources for you to continue this medication at home if necessary. If the patient does not want Suboxone, it is not necessary. The withdrawal process can safely be accomplished without this medication. The main determinants for long-term success as previously mentioned do have statistical connections to medications such as Suboxone.

What do I do to help control my cravings once I return home from detox?

There are a variety of support medications which can be offered depending upon the individual needs and individual circumstances.

Naltrexone is one of these medications and has been found to be effective in suppressing long-term urges for returning to the substance you may have been abusing. It appears to be affective in avoiding crossover addiction to alcohol, therefore, may be, despite its physiology, used for both opiates and long-term sobriety from alcohol. Naltrexone is available in the following forms:

  • Daily oral
  • Once a month injectable maintenance treatment

As previously mentioned, Naltrexone is associated with better long-term outcomes in terms of sobriety. The medication is most effective when given as part of a long-term maintenance program including group therapy,12-step programs, and if appropriate long-term psychotherapy.
